Stark white walls, blue
worn carpet and gold glitter Formica countertops. It did have one redeeming
quality: a gorgeous view of the Pacific. In just a few short weeks, this
oceanfront condo in Capitola-By-The-Sea was transformed into a tropical
oasis. Bamboo floors, sisal carpet, grass cloth wallpaper, large oil
rubbed bronze ceiling fans and new crown molding give this beach retreat
its charming appeal.
Luxury features include granite countertops, designer
oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, a hammered copper sink in the bathroom, and
a built-in wine refrigerator. A washer/dryer was added. After all, you’ll
need to wash all those sandy beach towels. New doors and drawers were
constructed to fit the existing cabinet frames in the kitchen and bath.
They were faced with burlap and framed with bamboo molding, giving them
a tropical look.
A 1950’s vintage Hawaiian postcard was enlarged
and printed onto high-quality wallpaper to create an 8’ x 12’ custom
mural for the kitchen wall. The sink area in the bathroom was wallpapered
with a bamboo print, textured wallpaper by high-end designer Donghia.
A bamboo framed custom mirror with metallic copper tones was hung over
the copper sink. A bamboo ladder serves well as a towel rack. The large
ocean-view balcony was transformed into a wonderful entertainment area.
The concrete floor was covered with a wood deck that was constructed
with Ipe, a hardwood that is low maintenance and very durable. An outdoor
kitchen, with built-in BBQ and ice chest, was custom built to fit the
space. It was tiled and faced with bamboo strips. All of these additions
come together to create a memorable and relaxing tropical vacation retreat.
Now all that’s left to do is to enjoy it.
